X-Ray Data Analysis of Cen X-3

Abstract

The Summer Project Report presents the results of observations of an X-Ray Binary Centaurus X-3 (Cen X-3) with the telescopes Soft X-Ray Telescope (SXT) and Large Area X-Ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) on board AstroSat. Cen X-3 is an X-Ray Binary system consisting of a neutron star as the compact object and an O-type giant as the companion. The data obtained was not analysed before. The data was processed to obtain scientific data like lightcurve, spectra and image. The spectra for both SXT and LAXPC was analysed by model fitting. The lightcurve for LAXPC was analysed to obtain the periodicity of the source. Since the companion of Cen X-3 is an O-type gaint, a safe assumption of the fact that accretion must be due to Stellar Wind and Roche Lobe overflow was possible. The presence of an accretion disk was confirmed. The timing analysis results verified the previously observed pulse rate periodicity of 4.80s to 4.84s of Cen X-3.
